Reg came to Sim-Fly wanting to fly a Spitfire – the reason being that he would be soon flying in a dual control Spitfire from Biggin Hill airfield and he wanted to understand the controls better before flying.
At Sim-Fly we specialise in tailoring your time on the flight simulator to what you, the customer, want to achieve.
So knowing that Reg would soon be in a high performance fighter it seemed normal to start off ‘gently’ in a Tiger Moth trainer – 100 mph rather than 250 mph!!
The first 10 minutes was spent going though the controls on the Tiger and then we did some taxiing on the airfield – it took a few journeys up and down the runway and onto the grass before Reg was controlling the Tiger perfectly with rudder and brakes (Some Tiger’s don’t have any brakes, but on a flight simulator anything is possible!!).
Then the big moment of take off, throttle wide open and roaring down the runway before lifting off at 60 mph.
We flew towards the city of London around 15 miles away on the sky line – Reg doing really well to guide the Tiger towards the city – always in perfect weather.
After around 10 minutes in the Tiger we swapped to Spitfire, just like that! – (anything on a flight simulator is poss….)
So now Reg is flying his dream aircraft Spitfire Mk 9 of Wing Commander Johnny Johnson towards Buckingham Palace to overfly the center of London…
We did a few circuits of London and then headed down the Thames to the east – why not fly under the Dartford Bridge?
So now Reg is lowering the nose and the bridge is coming up fast and he flew beautifully right under it – brilliant – by now Reg had been joined by his daughter, Catherine, who was cheering him on!!
You can see Reg’s Dartford Bridge flight Here
So now we are flying back to Biggin Hill, and landing a Spitfire after around 50 minutes of instruction is quite demanding, so we changed back to a …Tiger Moth.
Reg flew a nice, stable and safe approach at around 60 mph to land again at Biggin Hill – on the runway!
Reg will be back for one more flight before his real flight in a Spitfire, but next time he will be able to taxi and take off straight away in a Spitfire – as he’s already learnt the basics of flying! Why not try a landing too?
Great fun Reg! – we look forward to welcoming you back to Old Buckenham – very soon…
